Hi guys, I'd like to bring your attention to [info]livelongnmarry.

from the profile:
What is this?
Live Long And Marry is a fandom auction to benefit marriage equality. Bidding begins on July 1, 12:01 AM one minute after midnight Pacific Time, 2008, and closes on July 15, 12:01 AM one minute after midnight Pacific Time, 2008. Please do not bid until bidding opens.

What's the cause?
The auction will raise money for the fight against the California initiative which will legally destroy existing same-sex marriages and ban any further ones. If the initiative passes, it will write discrimination into the state constitution, annull existing marriages, and make Mr. Sulu cry.

How can I help?
You can bid on fanfic, original fic, vids, cookies, memorabilia, critique/betas, and much more! Or you can offer your skills and services as a writer, vidder, baker, knitter, or whatever else you'd like.

Things up for auction that might be of interest to a bandom fan include offers to write fanfic from Idyll, ArsenicJade, Tieleen and theloyalist, marijuana research, realism & plausibility checking, Starbucks care package and A Taste of Chicago care package. There are of course many, many other offers! Please do have a look and bid if you can. :)

VAMOS RAFA!

UGH SO EXCITED. How amazing was that match? I have warmed to Federer this year, so I was really happy that he fought back from two sets to love. However, I really think Rafa deserved to win, he worked so hard and just put everything into it and I LOVE HIS FACE, SHUT UP RAFA.

Plus I like that they are friends, and that they big each other up all the time, and that they had a teary cuddle at the net. Someone not me should write stories about how their on-court rivalry translates to the bedroom.

I'm also completely psyched that Venus won yesterday. She is my favourite current female player by about a million miles, and for some reason I cannot quantify, I really REALLY prefer her to Serena.

So this has been a fantastic Wimbledon! Not too many rain delays, and both my favourites won. Yay! It could only have been improved if Andy Roddick had made it further along, or Andy Murray had not made it in at all.

sewing newbie!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I Just completed my first clothing sewing "project."  I think it looks decent, but it could stand for some improvement.
This billows at my back too much (elasic waist) and gets rumpled over my butt. Im also afraid i look pregnant-ish (maybe i should stand up straight).

I think the front looks really wide- I could take in the sides a bit, but the I am afraid it will just get more rumpled over my back area.  I also modified the pattern to make gathered sleeves- otherwise it just looked like a bad kimono.  perhaps also i should take out some fabric over the shoulder area?

any sewers with ideas?

I have also made in the past: a pajama top and bottom set and several bags.  I have some great silk fabric I want to make a nice shirt out of, but I'm waiting until my skills are up to par!

So I'm eating cereal and skimming the Best Buy ad for any good sales and there I see Fastlane finally on DVD! I kind of figured that show never had much of a chance of making it to DVD. I mean, I'd hoped, most of my saved copies were not the best quality. I loved that show so much. It was so ridiculous and awesome.

Buying Hip Fabric for a novice?

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Given the last post about the number of "selling" related posts, I thought I'd try to start some discussion and get help in the process.

I feel like this is a really dumb question, but almost everytime I walk into a fabric store I feel incredibly overwhelmed and don't know where to start and end up walking out with nothing. (It should go without saying that I'm new at sewing, I took one class and have a couple books but nothing really explains in any depth how to pick out fabric.)

I have basically been told to stick to cotton. But I find in a lot of stores, the patterns are boring or simply NOT very hip. Plus, there are so many other kinds of fabric out there that look good or interesting! Plus, in many less-organized stores it's really just piled up to the ceilings and they aren't labeled well (or at all) and salespeople may or may not be helpful so I don't even know if it's cotton or some kind of blend or something else entirely? I think part of my frustration is that some days I have trouble "seeing" how the fabrics will work with my project or work with each other. (Some days I'm certainly more successful).

Soooo, my questions:
Does anyone have any good tips related to purchasing fabric?
Anyone have the same issues?
What kinds of non-cotton fabrics are easier to work with (especially for a newbie!)?
Favourite kinds of fabric to work with?
Any Canadian websites that sell hip fabric? (So I don't get nailed on shipping and duty fees)

Also - on the off chance anyone from Montreal is reading this, I'm interested in hearing about where you buy hip fabric without going broke! Also, if anyone knows of any English sewing classes/sewing groups/sewing drop-in "things"?

Jo Chen on likenesses.

Well, I just discovered why Zabriskie is most likely not riding the Tour, and I should not be surprised. That man has the worst crash luck. Fracturing a vertebrae! Don't know what's with the bizarre facial hair. He's so fast, but it seems like every time he gets close to something he has a serious crash. Of course my favorite would be the disaster prone one.

Need a bit of info from you guys. This place was a lot more active when I first joined, and I keep trying to find other communities like this one, but it is getting harder and harder. Can anyone reccomend a community that isn't all about showing me what you've made and then sending me a link to your etsy shop! Or your Ebay! If no one can find one, I am going to create one. I want a place that I can talk and communicate with other sewers, and crafters and not a place where everyone is trying to get me to by their stuff!

Thanks!

Then, tomorrow was another day...

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Yesterday I did a panel with Richard Price, and then I signed for (according to the newspapers)about six hundred people for five and a half hours. Normally I try very hard to be as nice to the people who've been waiting for hours as I was to the people at the beginning, but I think I may have been ordering the people at the back of the line around a bit just to make sure I finished before the Tom Stoppard talk started at seven. (I finished with 25 minutes to spare.)

The crowd was lovely, and all amazingly good-humoured given how long they were standing around.

Anyway. Five and half hours, which is about five hours and ten minutes longer than anyone else here, which meant that I was suddenly peered at suspiciously, as if revealed as some kind of odd alien being, by other writers with whom only that morning I was sharing jokes and food. I think they have now forgiven me.

[Edit to add, that was a joke, and the other authors were remarkably nice about it all. Tom Stoppard, who stopped in during the signing, thought it hilarious.]

After the Stoppard panel, which was marvellous, like a master class, (I'm typing this on the computer in the hotel lobby, and was just tapped on the shoulder by a Newspaper photographer who wanted me to come and pose for some shots, and seemed a bit baffled when I pointed out that I was working) I went to dinner with one of my Brazilian publishers. I hadn't really eaten since breakfast over twelve hours earlier, and discovered that when you are given a very large passionfruit caipirinha after a five and a half hour signing and on an empty stomach, you know it's working because your feet go numb. Possibly they simply went away. Luckily, my feet returned before I had to walk back to the hotel, but it was extremely odd.

Today it's the end of FLIP and the Desert Island Books panel, and I will read a bit from James Thurber's The Thirteen Clocks.

We ended up going to Holy Island and Seahouses yesterday. Nanna's friend is so cool, they have the kind of friendship you can only have after over 70 years of knowing someone. At times it was like a very interesting history lesson as they chatted about what they did in the war and where their husbands served. It was also like I had two nannas for the day. We stopped at Alnwick for coffee, and both started fretting because I wasn't wearing my coat and it was showering. The fact the cafe was literally over the road from where we parked didn't seem to matter, or the fact that James was only wearing a t-shirt too.

So we drove on after a most delicious mocha, and when we stopped for dinner I got out the car to find Vi pointedly holding my coat open, and then helped me put it on. I was surprised she didn't zip it up and put up my hood too. Then when we were actually eating dinner she asked if I needed my bread buttering, which really, I could manage. She was just this sweetheart and I liked her a lot. It really was a good day even though it rained heavily through most of it.

Today we've been re arranging some stuff in the living room. James and Corey have just gone to the dump so I'm taking a LJ break before they get back. While things are upside down right now it means things are done before James goes into hospital next week. He had his pre op assessment on Friday, so things are a go.

The [info]mcr4u stories are going live and I haven't had time to read any. This is not on! However, I have things to do first, so Remix for me now :)

ETA: I forgot to say. While at Seahouses James bought me a huge coffee mug. It had all the Aquarius qualities on it, including the words hot and moist on the bottom edge. See, my badfic addiction was destined from birth. It's not my fault!

REALLY IMPORTANT REALIZATION!!!!

IMPORTANT:

IN 'THE WEIGHT', BRENDON SINGS, "PUT THE LOAD RIGHT ON ME"!!! HE SINGS THAT OVER AN OVER AGAIN. THE LOAD, YOU GUYS. LOAD.

IN THE ABBY ROADS VERSION, THE LAST THING HE SINGS IS, "PUT YOUR LOAD RIGHT ON ME." YOUR LOAD. RIGHT ON HIM. (LOAD ALSO MEANS EJACULATE!!!!!!!!)

IN CONCLUSION: FACIALS!!!!!!!

That is all.
